時間に寄り添うデザインのメモ
flashからプロダクトデザインに興味の範囲が拡大したときに、一番新鮮に感じたのはデザインに「時間軸」が存在したことだった。
現実世界のモノは時間の経過とともに傷つき、磨耗し、手垢がついていくことで、あるときは魅力を増し、またあるときはくたびれはてていく。一方、webのデザインにそれはない。多少のバージョンアップこそあれ、ラウンチしたときの姿のまま、数ヶ月～数年でサイトから消えうせるのが常だ。
今までにこういった人為的に時間の流れや、風化を取り入れる実験とを何度かしてみたこともあったけれど、それをコンピューター上でシミュレートするのはとても難しい。
なぜならば、モノへの時間の経過は外見の変化だけではないからだ。
使いこんどキャッチャーミットのように性能上昇する場合もあれば、家具のように古色がつくことで風情が代わることもある。戦車や鎧の傷のようにそのモノが歩んだ軌跡の可視化であったりもする。こういった時間軸の力は大量生産された画一的なモノを、パーソナライズする機能でもある。
だけど一方で、いわゆるモダンデザインはこの時間の経過を否定する方向にあると思う。たぶん一番判りやすい例で言うとAppleの商品。i-podやimacといったプロダクトは、Appleストアに置かれている時間が、彼らにとって最良の時期であるようにデザインされている。買われてから後に時間とともに味が出てきたりは決してしない。店から持ち出された瞬間からじょじょに「劣化」していくのみだ。買わせる為に最高の姿でディスプレイされ、買い替えさせる為に速やかに死んでいくデザインなんだと思う。だからみんなipodにシリコンのケースをつけたりして、その劣化を一瞬でも先延ばししようとする。そんなモノをつければ、かえって不細工になってしまうのに、だ。
こういうことに対する潜在的な嫌悪感は誰もが感じているのか、ここ数年のヨーロッパのデザインの流れはモダニズム、ミニマリズムからクラフト趣味にシフトしつつあるらしい。
ヘラ･ヨンガリウスやインゴ・マウラーの秘蔵っ子のポール・コクセッジなんかが、デザイナー・オブ・ザ・イヤーなあたりが象徴してる。（余談だけど、このポール･コクセッジは僕と同い年で、既に天下を取っちゃってる上に、インタラクティブなプロダクトを得意としてるわけで、悔しいけど基本スペックが違いすぎる）。
あるいはブラジルのカンパーナ兄弟なんかも人気がある。彼らはブラジルのスラムに落ちてる木片や布、パイプ、紐などから、信じられないような美しい椅子を作り上げる。
もちろん、こういった品々は問題解決型のデザインではないし、プロダクトよりむしろアートピースと言っていい。NECやソニーは絶対こんな家電なんて作らない。
けど、彼らみたいな上流のスターな人たちが、脱マテリアリズムとかそういう小難しい概念を、判りやすいモノに落とし込むことで、時代が動いているのも事実だと思う（特に上流層がアートと縁がある欧米では）。個々のプロダクトをデザインする人じゃなくて、プロダクトの文脈を切り開く人たちなんだろうね。ひょっとしたら、こういった試行錯誤の中にひっそりと、年月を経るごとに魅力を増していくプロダクトの鍵、みたいなものが転がったりしているんじゃないかなぁ、とかちょっと期待してる。
なんか、話がまとまってない。
「時が経つほどに、使えば使うほど味がでる携帯や家電」今年のファイナルプロジェクトのテーマにしてみたいって話だったんだけど、空中分解してる。自分のなかでテーマが大きすぎて、咀嚼しきれてない。
まぁとりあえず、打倒ポール･コクセッジ！！ ←かなり無理目
